Our Mission |

To increase awareness and communication among federal, state, tribal, and private organizations and reduce the risk of Burrowing Owl declines throughout the state through research and education.

To provide a source by which historical and current status on the Burrowing Owl can be documented and

To provide resources on the ecology, distribution, and management of Burrowing Owls on private and public lands.

To involve citizens in monitoring owls, and their habitat, in order to increase the awareness of the Burrowing Owl.

Facilitate communication and information exchange among working group members

Increase awareness and appreciation within federal, state, and private organizations of Burrowing Owl management issues and decision-making processes.

Increase knowledge of Burrowing Owl populations throughout the state
Objectives

Provide regular communication among members of the New Mexico Burrowing Owl Working Group interested in Burrowing Owl management through e-mail discussions, meetings, symposia, workshops, newsletters, specialty publications, and other means.

Provide information and technical assistance to government officials, journalists, educators, other organizations, and the general public in the area of Burrowing Owl management.

Develop a 2 year Statewide Burrowing Owl survey to determine the status of Burrowing Owl populations throughout the state
Who We Are:

The New Mexico Burrowing Owl Working Group is a partnership of non-profit organizations, government agencies, private enterprises, and individuals with a common goal of promoting Burrowing Owl (Athene cunicularia)awareness and concervation in our state. Concerned over apparent local population declines in New Mexico, the group was formed in 2001 as a means of sharing data and information amoung researchers, agencies, and the public.
